2007 4Runner Grill Upgrade: TRD Pro Grille
If you're a 4Runner enthusiast who enjoys customizing and enhancing your early 2000s Toyota, you've probably come across the latest TRD Pro grille upgrade that many people are installing on their vehicles. But have you ever wondered about the history of this product? Will it work for you? Can you install it yourself? These are all excellent questions, and fortunately, I have the answers.
The TRD Pro grille style made its debut in 2015 on popular Toyota models like the Tundra, Tacoma, and 4Runner, as an upgraded off-road package option. This distinctive style featured a brand-new honeycomb design with the iconic silver "Toyota" badge prominently displayed at the front. Customers quickly fell in love with the fresh look, prompting the continued inclusion of this grille option on OEM vehicles. However, this left owners of older Toyota models feeling envious and desiring an updated black honeycomb grille option. And thus, the spirit of innovation was ignited.
Resourceful vehicle owners started crafting rudimentary prototypes of the new grille to fit their older vehicles. These prototypes gained immense popularity through platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and various online forums. Everyone wanted to know how to get their hands on one. That's when my personal journey begins. When I saw these new grille prototypes, I knew I had to have one for my 2006 4Runner. So I embarked on extensive research, reaching out to numerous individuals who had either built or purchased TRD Pro Grilles for their 4th Generation 4Runners. Eventually, I connected with someone who was custom making them. However, the price quoted to me was $425, plus parts and shipping. I simply couldn't justify paying such a steep amount. That's when I decided to take matters into my own hands. I resolved to build my own grille.
Armed with information from various forums, I finally put my plan into action. I ordered an OEM Tacoma TRD Pro grille, which I intended to modify. Once it arrived, I wasted no time and got to work. I removed the stock grille from my 4Runner and began cutting. First, I removed the center of the 4Runner grille and used it as a template to trace the outline on the Tacoma TRD Pro grille. Then, I carefully cut out the honeycomb pattern from the TRD Pro grille and seamlessly integrated it into the 4Runner grille. It required a fair share of screws, JB weld, and paint, but eventually, I had created my own grille. While it may not have been flawless up close, it looked quite impressive from a distance.
In the subsequent months, my creation garnered significant attention. People on Instagram kept reaching out to me, and fellow drivers would inquire about its origin while on the road. I even had an elderly gentleman halt traffic just to learn how it was made. It became clear to me that there was a market opportunity for such a product.
Before long, I managed to establish contact with a manufacturer capable of producing the exact grille I had hastily assembled years ago. That was the moment I decided to establish Trail Runner Customs. I firmly believed that combining an exceptional product with a commitment to serving Toyota enthusiasts would pave the way for a successful business venture. And so, I commenced selling these grilles. This particular grille fits all 4Runner models between the years 2006-2009.
